Our
September meeting began with a workshop in felt making with Beryl Weir from
Crafts from the Dungeon. After a short demonstration we all had a go at making
a felted coaster with the aid of a jug of water, a few drops of washing up
liquid, two pieces of bubble wrap, some lengths of coloured fleece and a lot of
elbow grease!
The business part of the meeting covered activities from the various extra groups that run between monthly meetings. The book club has become very successful, and instead of meeting in members’ homes we will now be trialling meeting at outside venues; the first being Wyevale Garden Centre. We use the local library book club scheme, which provides a box of copies of the same book, which we then discuss after reading it the previous month - followed by tea and cake!
The walking group has had a good turn-out on many lovely summer evenings, exploring the local footpaths around Whitegate led by our treasurer Morven, often finishing back at the Plough for refreshment.
Our evening craft group will be continuing for those who want to finish off their own projects or learn something new from the many skilled craftspeople at WI keen to share their knowledge. For example, you could learn how to knit, make a neat button hole or cut out a pattern!
If you just want to enjoy good company over a meal, join our quarterly lunch group which meet at various pubs and restaurants, or the more local Soup and Sandwich group which meet at the Mews and donate surplus funds to a designated local charity each year.
One of our biggest events of the year, the Village Show, followed the September meeting. The WI put this event on for the enjoyment of the whole community and beyond, and as usual it was a great day, with many visitors arriving to view the fantastic baking, crafts, art, photography, flower arranging and horticulture. There was also a children’s section, this year won by six year old George with his ‘junk model’ and the ‘most items in a match box’! There was also an array of inventive sock puppets entered for the Juniors Section, with many entries from Whitegate Brownies.
If you would like to join us at the WI to build new skills, make friends and enjoy talks and demonstrations see our website www.whitegatewi.weebly.com for details, contact as on the number below, or just come along. Our next monthly meeting is at 7.30pm on Wednesday 1 October at Whitegate Recreation Room, when there will be a talk by Roberts Bakery..... with samples to taste!
