History of salt and the development of the Lion Salt Works museum
Our July meeting was of local and historical interest with a talk on the history of salt and the development of the Lion Salt Works museum. The presentation about how the salt industry in Cheshire developed and the construction of the Lion Salt Works by Henry Ingram Thompson in 1894 was enlightening and the members were particularly interested in the personal stories of workers at the salt works. We’ll probably be planning a visit to the Lion Salt works museum in the coming months.
Early in July we visited the Kier Recycling Centre in Winsford. Wearing hi-visibility jackets we spent time in the Education Centre where we learnt about the recycling process followed by a site tour. We were amazed to hear that households in the UK throw away thousands of tonnes of food each year including 770,000 tonnes of potatoes and 660,000 tonnes of bread and these figures don’t include any food discarded by the supermarkets or manufacturers! We’d like to thank Kier and their staff for the warm welcome they gave us and also for a particularly informative and useful visit.
