At our meeting on the 2nd March we were delightfully entertained by John Croft also known as ‘The Ukulele Man. Since 1979 John has been a member of the George Formby Society and was President of the Society from 1988 to 1992. John brought with him examples of his banjo ukes and ukuleles and inevitably played some well known Formby songs for us including ‘I’m leaning on a lamp post’ as well as entertaining us with his stories. We learnt about the Formby family and their history in the entertainment industry and also about John’s meetings with George Harrison who wanted to learn the ukulele (yes that’s right George Harrison ... the Beatle). At the end of the talk we had a good old sing-a-long to a variety of nostalgic songs including It’s a long way to Tipperary, Daisy Daisy and Pack up your Troubles! It was a fabulous evening and if anyone is interested in finding out more you can visit John’s website at www.theukuleleman.com
As well as learning about George Formby this month, about 15 of us had a very informative and interactive visit to Morrisons supermarket in Winsford. As part of the visit we did flower arranging and had a cheese tasting and we learnt some of the tricks of the trade in marketing from our guide for the morning, Patrick. We have to say a huge thank you to all the team at Morrisons for making us feel so welcome, organising an interesting morning, spending so much time with us and providing us with such wonderful flowers to take home.
